High School sucks for everyone, who is not a White Hetero Sexual Middle Class (or rich) Christian Male

I do not believe it is fair to lump everyone who is "the other" into one general category. There are people who are discriminated against "easier" than others. When I say "easier" I mean they stick out more, ethnic minorities for example can not hide (not that anyone should have to hide) what they are. Also there are places that are much less likely to accept people who are not White Hetero-Sexual Catholics.

There are certain things that should extend outside of the school. There needs to be places that GLBT can go outside of the school. Mainly because there is an embarrassment factor that exists within high schools, but also because young students do not normally realize that there is life after high school, and if there was a place they could go to meet more people like them would be more beneficial than a group at school. There should be a complimentary group at school, but should not be the main source.

On the other hand, students who do not speak English very well need people in the schools to help them with homework. People who will help them learn English and make sure that they can understand what they are learning because many of these kids go home and speak their natural language with their family's and have no outside help, also it is a teachers job to teach.

No two students learn the same way. It would be impossible to construct a lesson plan that would cater to everyones needs. It is the teachers responsibility to make sure that all of the students understand the pertanent material be it a male, female, minority, GLBT, poor, rich, middle-class, working-class student.

There is always an "other".

Why only non-masculine boys as feminists? I believe that is exclusion. (30)

It would seem a little strange that people who are in a GLBT group would be rascist, I would think that they would know how it feels to be discriminated against (30)

Knowledge about the other is the best way to stop discrimination. There should be three classes in charge of getting this knowledge out Health class, History, and English.

Kids shouldn't stereotype
"I get it. I don't get it" Stan from South Park on racism (34, 35).

There is nothing we can do (35)

Everyone who wants to be a teacher or gain power in society must be racist, sexast, and hate poor people (36)

Kids should not stereotype... again (40)

I think I will just repeat myself from page 40 to 47

America sucks for people who are not: White, speak English, heterosexual, rich or middle-class, Males

I am not sure how I feel after reading this. I know I am upset because Kumashiro has just stereotyped everyone after extensivly talking about how people should not stereotype. As a white heterosexual middle class male who just read 22 pages talking about how I am responsible for the continuation of people being marginalized was a little annoying. Kumashiro is right when he says that people are marginalized but after awhile it seemed like everyone in power was living on East Egg and you know how they do not like people from West Egg. There are things that need to be done; and from everything I have seen, from Oshkosh North High School to UWM there are a number of different clubs and alliances that allow people to congregate and hash out their problems. There is legal gay marriage in a few states and it will be legal in the U.S. at some point in time in the near future, we have a Black President, there is progress Mr. Kumashiro stop being so negative.

  1. I agree with you that "white heterosexual males" sometimes get burdened with all the blame for marginalization. For example, i'm willing to bet that black kids or asian kids will make fun of a gay kid just as much as a white kid would. And white's aren't the only people that are racist. some cultures, including "white" culture, are very strict about who their child dates or hangs out with. if a black girl brought home a white boy i'm sure there is just as much potential for drama as if a white boy brought home a black girl.
now obviously whites ARE responsible for a whole lot of racist stuff in this country..but to always place the burden on them to be the ones to change is wrong. our SOCIETY is what needs to change.

  2. No two students learn the same way, there is always an "other". For me this is the most obvious, yet troublesome feature of teaching. Knowing that one doesn't have the time and expertise to inform a class on the "other" experience is truly disheartening. One can't possibly know enough on a subject to address the interests and beliefs of every single pupil. There will always be students who are disassociated with certain topics, even if they are the "normal" white, middle-class, males. I guess one needs to rid oneself of impossible expectations and concentrate on the task of informing students to the best of one's abilities, with consideration to the most common good.

  3. I agree that it is interesting that he does steryeotype everyone who is a "other" as he lectures us about the dangers of stereotyping. I do think that he is quite negative and he lumps everyone into simple categories as "others" when we are all so diverse as a people that it is very difficult to label anyone.
